bad backs
I am still hobbling around because of my gimpy back. I am amazed at variety of opinions I have received regarding lower back pain. I had no idea. Passionate opinions too. I must see a chiropractor; I must not go to a chiropractor; I really need physical therapy; Vitamin B helps nerves; stretch, stretch, stretch; rest and don't aggravate it; exercise; Have I considered a massage?; Codeine; muscle relaxants; heat; ice; reflexology; I probably need better shoes.
It is clear that a lot of people care for me and want to help any way they can. I am touched by their concern. I am still a little fuzzy about what I should be doing, however. Too much information - too many options. The only things I have done so far have been stretching and Codeine. (I have become a big fan of Codeine - it makes all your problems go away - I like it a lot). I am seeing the Doc again tomorrow. I think they will take X-rays. We'll see.
My buddy Rob things I am just being a wimp and that I just need to quit my crying and toughen up. He's a real friend.
Robots
My 12 yr old daughter Abby, just finished a week long robotics camp at Wichita State University. She and the other middle school students on her team worked all day, day after day, designing, building, and programing robots to perform certain tasks in competition with other teams. It was really cool - and she did awesome. It was strange, though, watching her at work. She seemed so much older sitting there with her laptop and wires everywhere trying to program her robot to use echo-location sensors so it doesn't bump into things, or light sensors so her robot can differentiate between colors. It was really quite impressive. And, it's all over my head. I find myself wanting to say things like, "well, I'll be" and "It's amazing what they can do these days" and "I never would have believed it" and "in my day we just read about robots and watched them in movies" - things like that.
My aging back and my aging kids are making me feel quite... aged.

Greg,
Awfully sorry to hear about your back pains:-( I do hope you can figure it out. May God teach you through this time of pain.
PS--Make sure you don't become addicted to that codeine stuff!
i say go see a chiropractor. i know a good one hillsboro who just opened a practice there.
I learned that I was allergic to codeine when I had my wisdom teeth out. If it didn't cause me to break out in hives and have an asthma attack, I'd be right there with you singing its praises...
Abby seems to be quite the budding engineer, huh? That's been fun to hear about... something else she and Uncle Darin can bond over.
Just rub some dirt on it! That's what Peyton would say! Dirt cures a lot of ailments! Saves money too, there's dirt everywhere! I also heard that it's not as addicting as, say codeine is. Although Kansas dirt is really good stuff...Just be careful with it.
Alyssa did the robots thing when she was Abby's age too and it was way cool! But instead of saying, "I'll be..." I asked, "Why didn't they have those cool things around when I was younger?" Logan would answer that question by letting me know dirt had not even been invented when I was that age! (so you can be doubly thankful for dirt now! LOL!
I will certainly be praying for your back situation.
Well, I think you need another remedy to add to your list: Kelly's uncle Bobby would highly recommend an inversion table... you just need to hang upside down like a bat for 15 minutes or so twice a day. You'll be running and golfing and shooting hoops before you can say "Why is my face so red??"
Sorry I missed you call. I was playing tennis with Paul (beating him, I might add, but he has an aching shoulder, so I won't gloat too much). At any rate, when you get to north Texas ad settle in, give me another call so we can talk about how best to keep the robotic/engineering excitement at a fever pitch in the Holmes clan.
As Greg L. mentioned, I'll also be praying for relief from your backache.
Codiene has nothing on steriods. Alas I only had an excuse to stay on them legally for 3 weeks last summer, but it was great while it lasted - I got more work done around the house in that 3 weeks than I've done in a year since then. Seriously, though, I'm so sorry to hear about your back and pray it will soon be healed.
